陪審室裡，一個人提出：如果少年真殺了父親，為什麼三小時後還要回家取刀？有人當笑話聽，有人卻認真起來。一句 off the top of my head（隨口一想）是沒打草稿就發言的擋箭牌，stand a chance（毫無勝算）則點破了那個法庭指派律師的處境。想學會站著把話說到點上，這幾句很頂用。

陪審室裡，一個人質疑少年憑什麼被定罪，丟擲一個關鍵問題：要是他真殺了父親，為什麼三小時後還敢回家取刀？旁人回敬說這故事編得像偵探小說。而那個律師其實是 court-appointed（由法庭指派的），沒錢沒名聲，很難真心替當事人打這場官司。發言時想不自曝其短，可以來一句 off the top of my head（隨口一想）；要強調某件事必須辦妥，就用 see to it（確保做到，務必辦妥）。這些說法在開會、辯論、被人追問時都用得上，比干巴巴的 I think（我覺得）更自然。

我認為疑點已經夠多，足以讓我們懷疑他當時到底在不在場……
把「合理懷疑」說得平實又準確，不帶情緒卻最有說服力。

表達保留意見、主張再查時用；正式討論裡非常自然。
There is too much doubt to be certain. ／ The doubt here is real and reasonable.
中性
enough doubt 稍頓，whether he was there 輕輕連讀。
There's enough doubt that we can wonder whether it happened at all. 疑點夠多，足以讓人懷疑這事到底發生過沒有。

把刀捅在別人胸口上到處走，可不太體面。
用最正經的口氣說最荒唐的託詞，冷笑話裡把邏輯漏洞戳穿。

反話式吐槽時用；對不熟的人這麼說會被當成真在講禮數。
Leaving knives around is hardly polite. ／ That is not exactly good manners.
口語

“That's not a very promising situation for a young lawyer.”
對一個年輕律師來說，這可不是什麼好差事。
用輕描淡寫點破辯護律師沒動力，懷疑從利益動機悄悄生根。

委婉評價不利處境時能用；對當事人別太直，這種留白更合適。

not a very 連讀，promising 重音在第一音節。
That's not a very promising situation for a new team. 對新團隊來說，這局面可不樂觀。
It could mean he didn't want the case, or he resented being appointed. It's the kind of case that brings him nothing... no money, no glory, not even much chance of winning. That's not a very promising situation for a young lawyer. He'd really have to believe in his client to put up any kind of a good case... and, as you pointed out a minute ago, obviously he didn't.
可能說明他不想接這個案子，或者對被指派心懷不滿。 這種案子什麼也給他帶不來…… 沒錢，沒名聲，連贏的機會都不大。 對一個年輕律師來說，這可不是什麼好前程。 他得真心相信自己的當事人，才可能把這場官司好好打一打…… 而正如你剛才指出的，他顯然並不相信。
Maybe the boy did kill his father, didn't hear the scream... did run out in a panic, did calm down three hours later... and come back to get the knife, risking being caught by the police. Maybe all of those things happened, but maybe they didn't.
也許那孩子真殺了父親，沒聽見尖叫…… 確實驚慌地跑了出去，三小時後也確實冷靜了下來…… 回來取刀，冒著被警察抓住的風險。 也許這些事都發生了，但也可能根本沒發生。
下一章 · 11out of thin air無中生有這場戲：重演十五秒到門口字面是「活著的盡頭」，其實是一句誇張的口語，表示「活見鬼、離譜到家」。戲裡有人聽到少年的辯解就冒出一句 Well, if this isn't the living end，意思是這事荒唐得沒邊了。
可以說 didn't stand a chance。stand a chance 是「有機會」，加上否定就是毫無機會；戲裡說那孩子自己的律師都知道他沒戲，用的正是這句。
就是「隨口一想、沒細想」，用來在沒準備的情況下先講個大概。戲裡有人要發言前先說這句，等於給自己留個餘地，說錯了也不打緊。
see to it 後面常接 that 從句，意思是「確保做到、務必辦妥」，語氣比 make sure 更正式。戲裡有人推斷，兇手得冷靜到能 see to it that 刀上不留指紋。
說 court-appointed，比如 He was court-appointed 就是「他是法庭指派的」。這在美國司法裡很常見：沒錢請律師的被告，會由法庭指派一位給他。
