下一章 · 14a dupe被愚弄的人這場戲：翻出日記當場翻臉字面是「每場遊戲都有規則」，常用來說凡事都有規矩、不能由著一個人。亨伯特用它挖苦夏洛特，暗示婚姻也該按他的條件來，語氣陰陽怪氣。
accept the charges，指接聽對方打來的長途、由自己承擔電話費。夏洛特說 I'll accept the charges，就是「這筆話費我來付」，對方就不用擔心費用。
duty 是職責，the line of duty 是職務的範圍，beyond the line of duty 就是「超出職責範圍、分外之事」。亨伯特說自己盡的義務遠超本分，其實是在諷刺。
scoot 是「快速地小步移動」，scoot along after you 就是像小狗一樣貼著你小步跟著跑。亨伯特用這句自嘲，說自己再累也聽話地跟著夏洛特。
without consulting me。consult 是「徵詢、商量」，without 後面接動名詞。這裡說別不跟我商量就給她寄糖果，相當於先斬後奏，語氣很不客氣。
