blab。指把不該說的秘密隨口說出去。亨伯特說 you'll blab，就是「你會到處亂講」，所以他不肯把莫娜的事告訴他。
novel 作名詞是「小說」，作形容詞是「新奇的、新穎的」。亨伯特說 That's a novel subject，表面誇題材新鮮，其實有點端著，等於「這題材倒是新鮮」。
idiosyncrasy，複數 idiosyncrasies。指個人特有、有點古怪的小習慣。亨伯特說寫詩寫在日記本里是 one of my little idiosyncrasies，就是「我的一點小怪癖」。
object to。object 在這裡讀重音在後，to 後面接名詞或動名詞。亨伯特問 What do you object to，就是「你嫌它哪兒不好」，客氣地追問對方反對什麼。
