夏洛特翻到了亨伯特的日記。她一邊念，一邊發現自己被寫成了 The Haze woman（黑茲家的那個女人）、the brainless baba（沒腦子的蠢婆娘），於是說 the stupid Haze is no longer your dupe（蠢黑茲再也不會上你的當了）。亨伯特想解釋那是小說片段，說名字只是 by mere chance（純屬巧合）寫進去的，可她一句 You're a disgusting, despicable, loathsome, criminal fraud（你是個噁心、卑鄙、下流、犯法的騙子）就把話堵死，宣佈當天就走。她上樓對著亡夫哈羅德說話，隨後一個電話說她被車撞了。
A1–C2 是歐標等級。點一個等級後，比它高的卡片會變淡，播放到那裡不會自動暫停。
“That's my diary. We don't read other people's diaries, do we?”
那是我的日記。我們不會去讀別人的日記，對吧？
先用陳述句劃私權，再拿反義疑問句逼人認同，越彬彬有禮越顯失控。

對方越界卻不想撕破臉時用，熟人之間可以，對上級少用。

用過去完成的虛擬句把責任推給死者，既是悔恨也是推卸，一句抵一整段獨白。

事後追悔、把因果推給某個已定局的事時用，別拿來推卸真實責任。

四個形容詞逐個加重，fraud 前短停，收句狠狠落下。

你別碰它，不然我就朝窗外喊了！
用「再碰我就喊人」這種孩子氣的威脅當最後防線，慌亂和絕望都寫在裡面。

情急之下嚇阻對方時能用；對上級或陌生人說會顯得失控，儘量換成正式警告。

leave that alone 連讀，重音在 scream，window 上揚收尾。

Those notes you found were fragments of a novel that I'm writing. Your name, and Lolita's, were put in by mere chance... ...just because they were handy. That's the way novelists work. They think of the names of their friends... ...and the people who enter into their daily life... ...like the Farlows... ...and they think up funny situations.

下一章 · 15darkest before the dawn黎明前最黑暗這場戲：鄰居上門安慰並談喪葬費指被人騙、被人利用的傻瓜、冤大頭。夏洛特說 the stupid Haze is no longer your dupe，意思是「蠢黑茲再也不會上你的當了」，是翻臉時最狠的一句。
couldn't help it，指明知不該卻還是做了、沒法剋制。夏洛特說她對不起哈羅德，卻 I couldn't help it，就是「可我也控制不住」。
by mere chance。mere 是「只不過」，by mere chance 就是「純屬偶然」。亨伯特說你的名字和洛麗塔的名字都是隨手寫進去的，用的就是這個說法。
know better next time。know better 是「懂事了、知道不該那樣」，next time 是「下次」。這裡對亡夫保證下次會找一個更值得的人，用的就是這句。
the soul of integrity。soul 是靈魂、精髓，integrity 是正直、誠實，合起來就是「正直的化身」。夏洛特對著亡夫說 You were the soul of integrity，把他捧得很高，再反襯自己的失望。
