暴風雨夜，靈媒海爾加來借蠟燭，進門先說自己 psychic（靈媒），還預言 It will be big storm（會有一場大風暴）。她撞見自稱秘書的克利福德，忽然盯著問 You wear boots（你穿靴子）？一個借蠟燭的小插曲，把案子的關鍵線索抖了出來。

暴風雨夜，荷蘭靈媒海爾加冒雨來布魯爾家借蠟燭，說小屋裡一根都沒有。自稱是秘書的克利福德開門讓她進來，兩人寒暄；海爾加自稱 psychic（靈媒），還說布魯爾先生的妻子去世前她就有感應，又預言 It will be big storm（會有一場大風暴），風雨雷電都報了個準。聊著聊著她忽然注意到對方的靴子，追問 You wear boots（你穿靴子）——為破案埋下伏筆。西德尼回家，她還不忘問他有沒有在暴風雨前 get home（到家）。值得學的三個說法：psychic 是靈媒；lightning and thunder 是電閃雷鳴；be able to do something 是能夠做某事。

下一章 · 26fed up with受夠了這場戲：通靈師冒雨再次警告指「靈媒、通靈的人」，自稱能感應到別人看不到的事。臺詞裡海爾加一句 I'm psychic，就是「我是靈媒」。
說 lightning and thunder，lightning 是閃電，thunder 是雷。臺詞裡預報暴風雨時，把 wind and rain、lightning and thunder 一起列了出來。
多數時候不是質問，而是客氣的提議，相當於「你何不……」。臺詞裡 Why don't you come in? 就是「你何不進來呢」，比祈使句柔和。
意思相近，但 be able to 更正式，也能用在 will、完成時等 can 不方便的時態裡。臺詞裡 able to predict his wife's death 就是「能預言他妻子的死」。
get home 就是「到家、回到家」。臺詞裡問他有沒有在暴風雨前 get home，意思是「趕在暴風雨前回到家」。
