an edge to有一道到此為止的邊

I was in a television studio when the Apollo mission launched. It was the first time that any human had moved away far enough from the earth to see the whole planet. And this is what they saw... what we all saw. Our planet, vulnerable and isolated. One of the extraordinary things about it was that the world could actually watch it as it happened. It was extraordinary that you could see what a man out in space could see as he saw it at the same time. And I remember very well that first shot. You saw a blue marble, a blue sphere in the blackness, and you realized that that was the earth. And in that one shot, there was the whole of humanity with nothing else except the person that was in the spacecraft taking that picture. And that completely changed the mindset of the population, the human population of the world. Our home was not limitless. There was an edge to our existence. It was a rediscovery of a fundamental truth. We are ultimately bound by and reliant upon the finite natural world about us. This truth defined the life we led in our pre-history, the time before farming and civilization.

阿波羅任務發射的時候，我正在電視演播室裡。 這是人類第一次飛得離地球夠遠，遠到能看見整個星球。 而這，就是他們看見的…… 也是我們所有人看見的。 我們的星球，脆弱，又孤零零的。 這件事了不起的地方之一，是全世界居然能在發生的同時親眼看著。 你能在同一時刻，看見太空中那個人正在看見的一切，這太不可思議了。 那第一個鏡頭，我記得清清楚楚。 你看見一顆藍色的彈珠， 漆黑之中的一顆藍色球體，你這才意識到，那就是地球。 就在那一個鏡頭裡，是全人類， 除此之外什麼都沒有，只有飛船裡那個拍下照片的人。 這一點，徹底改變了地球上全體人類的心態。 我們的家園，並不是無邊無際的。 我們的存在，是有邊界的。 這是重新發現了一條根本的真理。 說到底，我們既受限於身邊這個有限的自然世界，也依賴著它。 這條真理，決定了我們史前的生活，也就是農耕和文明出現之前的那段日子。
