丹福斯逼普羅克特認罪、供出同夥，普羅克特回一句 I am not empowered to trade your life for a lie（我可沒權力拿你的命去換一句謊話）。他說那些人 They think to go like saints（想裝得像聖人一樣赴死），可 I like not to spoil their names（我不想壞了他們的名聲）。他又說 you will prove its whiteness or you cannot live（你得證明靈魂乾淨，否則活不下去），要他交代同謀；普羅克特只認自己：I speak my own sins; I cannot judge another（我只說自己的罪，我無權評判別人），I have no tongue for it（我說不出口）。庭上催他 You will sign your name or it is no confession（你得簽上名字，否則就不算認罪）。想學守住底線、不肯連累別人的英文，這段最硬。

他們以為自己能像聖人一樣死去。
一句輕蔑就把別人的殉道說成自欺，反諷全在 like saints 上。

譏諷別人自我美化時用；當面說等於拆臺，關係一般別這麼講。

中性
think to 相連，like saints 帶諷意。
They think to go like saints just because they filed a complaint. 就因為遞了封投訴信，他們就以為自己是聖人。

把拒絕供人說得像一種口味，輕描淡寫裡全是分寸。

婉拒做損人名聲的事時用；語氣偏舊，現代口語可說 I'd rather not。

like not 連讀，spoil their names 放重。

用『沒有舌頭』代替『我不說』，把拒絕說得乾淨又沒有火氣。

不想開口談某事、想體面收住時用；對追根問底的人說能留餘地。
