Woody Keeps Forky Out of the Trash, explained

What's really going on

The comedy is in the mismatch: a spork who has decided he belongs in the garbage, and a cowboy who spends the whole trip hauling him out of it. The song turns that running gag into something bigger, since "I can't let you throw yourself away" is what a friend or a parent says to someone who has given up. The little spork keeps announcing, "I don't wanna be a toy," which is the same line every character has to answer in their own way. Someone answers, "I got this," and the trip becomes the cowboy's last stretch of purpose before he has to decide what he is for. It is funny, but the lyrics sit close to the film's real question.

Theme

DutyWoody takes responsibility for keeping Forky safe, even when the little spork keeps trying to get thrown out.
FriendshipThe song frames the rescue as care: Woody refuses to let his new friend give up on himself.

So it seems to me like you're never gonna behave yourself

The lyric that answers despair with ordinary beauty, asking Forky to want a life.
