Puss Loses to the Bounty Hunter, explained

What's really going on

The scene is where the legend gets dismantled, one blow at a time. Puss enters with the myth intact — "Puss in Boots laughs in the face of death" — and the bounty hunter answers by simply being better: "Slow. Sloppy. Sad." The sword on the floor and the line "I am no longer worthy" mark the end of the story he has been telling about himself. Then the film does something sly and moves straight into a funeral, letting the eulogy salute a reputation even as its owner sits there defeated. The jokes about his many names and the offer of "a song" keep the scene funny, but the real subject is what is left of a hero after his title is taken. Dignity has a new address.

Theme

PridePuss's boast about laughing at death collapses the moment a better fighter proves the legend false.
IdentityLosing the sword forces him to face who he is without the name and the stories.

There are no words to express such a loss.

A stock eulogy line, played straight for comic effect.
