The Fight in Jack Horner's Lair, explained

What's really going on

Jack Horner's lair is the film's clearest picture of how its villains think: everything is a collection, and everyone is either useful or disposable. He lists his enchanted objects as curiosities, then calls them nothing next to the Wishing Star, which is the only thing he wants. When the other parties arrive, the scene becomes a scramble, and the comedy comes from how openly selfish everyone is — Puss and Kitty competing over who is double-crossing the bears, Goldilocks ready to fight for the map. Horner's answer is the line that defines him, "This is why you don't cross Jack Horner," followed by the touch that turns men into gold. The chapter ends on his exasperation with the talking animals, and the joke lands because he is one more fairy-tale figure who refuses to see himself that way.

Well, I love it. It's distinguished.

A comic disagreement over a face tattoo, showing the villains bickering like anyone else.

With this wish, I will finally be the master of all magic.

His plan stated plainly: the Wishing Star is a route to total power.

The Wishing Star, which he believes will make him the master of all magic; he keeps it in a box and wants the map that leads to it.

After saying that this is why you don't cross him, he uses the Midas touch and turns them into gold.

Why do Puss, Kitty, and the others come to the lair?

They all want the map to the Wishing Star, so they converge on Jack's collection room and end up fighting over it.

What is the joke about Puss and Kitty double-crossing?

They argue over who was hired to double-cross the bears, each claiming the job, which shows how self-interested the thieves are.

What does "have a lot of nerve" mean here?
