雙人婚禮上，培尼狄克和碧翠絲照樣嘴硬：一句 Do not you love me（你不愛我嗎），回的是 Why, no（不啊）。直到有人掏出情書，一首 halting sonnet（磕磕絆絆的歪詩）和另一封親筆信當眾對質，兩人只好承認 Here's our own hands against our hearts（手跡拆穿了真心）。想學嘴硬否認、被當場拆穿時的英語，這段最好笑。

婚禮上輪到培尼狄克和碧翠絲，兩人照舊嘴硬。有人問 Do not you love me（你不愛我嗎），得到的是 Why, no（不啊）；被追問就拿 in friendly recompense（當作朋友間的回報）搪塞，還說別人 much deceived（大受矇騙）。可希羅拿出證據：一封是培尼狄克親筆的 halting sonnet（磕磕絆絆的歪詩），寫給碧翠絲；另一封是碧翠絲的筆跡，寫著她對培尼狄克的心意。人證物證俱全，兩人只好認栽，感嘆 Here's our own hands against our hearts（手跡拆穿了真心）。培尼狄克最後鬆口 I will have thee（我娶你），還嘴硬補一句 by this light（憑這燈光起誓），說自己不過是 for pity（出於可憐）。想學嘴硬、否認、被拆穿後還嘴硬，這段全是範本。

一句「我能解釋」把滿場震驚按下，神父的從容和分量全在裡頭。

字面是「我們的手跟我們的心作對」，hands 指筆跡、手寫的信，hearts 指真心。兩人的親筆情書反過來說明了心意，所以是「手跡拆穿了真心」，承認得又無奈又好笑。
light 是「燈光」，by this light 就是「憑這盞燈起誓」，是一種賭咒的說法，類似 by this light I swear。培尼狄克用它給嘴硬加碼，說自己娶她只是可憐她。
qualify 常見意思是「合格」，但在正式英語裡也可以表示「解釋、限定、把話說圓」。臺詞 All this amazement can I qualify，就是「這一連串驚奇，我能解釋清楚」。
sick for me。sick 在這裡不是「生病」，而是「相思、為情所困」，sick for someone 就是「為某人害相思」。臺詞裡還誇張成 nearly dead for me（為我快死了）。
recompense 是「回報、補償」，friendly 是「朋友般的」。in friendly recompense 就是「當作朋友間的回報」，用來把感情說淡，其實是嘴硬之下的退路。
