培尼狄克想用詩求愛，結果滿腦子找不到韻，連「淑女」都只能配 baby（寶貝）；他自己承認 I was not born under a rhyming planet（生來就不在詩星底下）。等碧翠絲來了，兩人照舊針鋒相對，最後冒出一句 Thou and I are too wise to woo peaceably（你我太聰明，沒法安安靜靜談情說愛）。想學嘴上不饒人的英語，這段是範本。

從古詩人一路數落到自己的笨嘴，自嘲層層加碼，節奏像一段單口相聲。

foul breath 連讀，noisome 重讀，unkissed 乾脆收尾。

下一章 · 23an eye of favour青睞這場戲：喜訊傳來後兩對定情woo 是「求愛、追求」，peaceably 是「和平地、不吵不鬧地」。woo peaceably 就是「安安靜靜地談情說愛」。碧翠絲說兩人 too wise to woo peaceably，意思是太聰明了，非鬥嘴不可。
字面是「我不是生在會押韻的星象底下」，意思就是「我天生沒有寫詩的天分」。培尼狄克用它自嘲：想寫詩求愛，卻連韻都押不上。
fall in love with。fall 是「跌落」，fall in love with someone 就是「愛上某人」，也可以說 fall in love 單用。臺詞裡問他「哪一樣缺點讓你先 fall in love with me」。
in spite of 是「不顧、儘管」，也可以帶點「偏要跟……作對」的意思。臺詞裡 In spite of your heart 就是「明擺著跟你的心過不去」，很符合兩人鬥嘴的語氣。
horn 字面是「犄角」，在英語裡還暗指「綠帽」，因為不忠的丈夫會被說成頭上長角。培尼狄克本來在湊韻腳，順口押出這個不吉利的詞，自己都說這些韻不吉利。
