培尼狄克偷聽完眾人編排他的話，信以為真，一句 This can be no trick（這不可能是圈套）之後就淪陷了。他說既然碧翠絲愛他，it must be requited（就得回報），還決定放下驕傲，最後喊出 I will be horribly in love with her（我就要瘋了一樣愛上她了）。想學怎麼表達「得到回應」「寧死也不」，這幾句話最好用。

下一章 · 13double meaning雙關這場戲：設局偷聽勸她動心字面是「腦子造出來的紙彈子」，指諷刺挖苦的話、寫在紙上的俏皮話，看著嚇人，其實傷不了人。培尼狄克用它來反問：這些挖苦還能攔住他戀愛嗎？
requite 是「回報、報答」，be requited 就是「得到回應」。培尼狄克聽說對方愛他，脫口一句 it must be requited，意思是這份情當然得有來有往。
would rather die than。rather 表寧願，die than 後面接那件寧死不做的事。臺詞的 She will rather die than give any sign of affection，就是「她死也不肯露出一絲情意」。
die a bachelor。bachelor 是未婚男子，die a bachelor 就是到死都單身。培尼狄克說 When I said I would die a bachelor，當年他確實這麼發誓過。
horribly 本是「可怕地」，放在 in love 前面是誇張的說法，等於「愛得死去活來、瘋了一樣愛」。培尼狄克嘴上嫌棄，最後還是用這個詞認了輸。
