婚禮開始，神父照例問有沒有 inward impediment（內心的障礙），若有就以靈魂之名，命他們把話說出來。誰料誓詞剛要交換，男方當眾翻臉拒婚，場面瞬間崩塌。有人看著這一切只說 Let us go（我們走吧），說這些話曝了光，足以 smother her spirits（把人憋悶垮）。想學法庭和儀式上的正式英語，這些話最好用。

impediment 是「障礙」，inward 是「內心的」。婚禮上神父問有沒有 inward impediment，就是問兩人心裡有沒有什麼隱情，使這段婚事不能成立。
counterpoise something。counterpoise 本是「配重、使平衡」，引申為「與……相當、抵得上」。臺詞裡用它說拿不出與這份厚禮相等的回贈。
utter something。utter 作動詞是「說出、講出」，比 say 更正式。神父說 I charge you to utter it，就是「我命你們把它說出來」，用在莊重場合。
smother 是「悶住、使窒息」，spirits 指情緒、精神。整句是「把人憋悶垮、壓得透不過氣」。結尾有人擔心這些醜事一曝光，會把希羅整個壓垮。
