字面是「憑藉職務的效力」，就是「憑職務、借職權」。訓話裡說碰上小偷，you may suspect him, by virtue of your office，意思是憑你們的差事就可以懷疑他。
good 是「好的」，true 在這裡是「忠誠可靠」。合起來就是「忠厚老實、靠得住的人」，常用來稱讚一個人品德好。開場那句就是問大家是不是這樣的人。
take no note of。note 是「注意」，take no note of 就是「不放在心上、不去理會」。臺詞裡說對方不肯站住，就 take no note of him，別理他放他走。
