下一章 · 16climb the social ladder往上爬這場戲：持槍逼問愛人是否出軌意思是「真心為某人著想、把對方的利益放在心上」。它在職場裡常被當成「我是為你好」的擋箭牌，說的人未必真在替你考慮。
可以說 drag your feet，也可說 drag one's feet，意思是磨蹭著不辦事、故意拖著。比如 He's been dragging his feet on the report，就是「他一直拖著那份報告」。
字面是「把該交的費用交了」，實際指吃夠了苦、交夠了學費、熬過了最難的那段。常用來暗示自己現在的地位是熬出來的，別人沒資格抱怨。
意思是「忍著、硬扛著受著」。上面接忍受的物件，比如 put up with the tyrants 就是「忍那些暴君」，語氣比 stand 更強調默默受著。
