the jaws of death。jaws 是「嘴巴、血盆大口」，把死亡想成張開的嘴，形象地表示九死一生、命懸一線。
trunks 在這裡是「箱子、空殼」，empty trunks 引申為「繡花枕頭、中看不中用」。臺詞說漂亮的壞人不過是 devil 雕飾過的空殼。
是伊麗莎白時代一種避諱式咒罵，相當於「老天、見鬼」。它由 God's lid 縮略而來，現在只在莎劇裡見到。
