Wyldstyle Rescues Emmet, Explained: drop the act

Wyldstyle grabs Emmet, throws him on a motorcycle, and hauls him through the city while the authorities close in. Mid-chase she tells him, "You're The Special," and connects it to the Piece he touched. The joke is that he is the least special person around.

What happens

Wyldstyle pulls Emmet onto her motorcycle and speeds through Lego City to escape capture. As they ride, she reveals that the Piece he found means he is the Special One of the prophecy, the most extraordinary person in the universe. Emmet is baffled, and she introduces herself as Wyldstyle.

Wyldstyle Rescues Emmet, explained

What's really going on

The rescue runs on a misunderstanding that Emmet never corrects. "You're The Special" is the line that starts it: because he touched the Piece, a stranger has already made him the center of a prophecy. He goes along with it — "Uh, yes. That's me" — mostly because someone in a fast vehicle is telling him the most important thing about himself. The chase is comic, but the setup is the film's whole argument: a nobody can be told he is a hero and slowly start acting like one.

She believes he is the Special One of the prophecy because he found the Piece of Resistance. She is not saving a friend; she is securing the figure the rebellion has been waiting for.

Does Emmet actually believe he is the Special?

Not really. He agrees with a hesitant "Uh, yes. That's me" when she insists, going along with it out of confusion and because he has no better explanation.

What is the Piece of Resistance?

The object Emmet touched earlier, which the prophecy ties to the Special One. In this scene it becomes the proof of his identity and the reason the authorities are chasing them.

Why does the chase matter to the story?

It turns the prophecy from words into action. Emmet is forced into a hero's role before he has any of the skills, which sets up the film's idea that anyone can grow into it.
