行刑前，神父安慰死囚，可對方哭著問 Why do I have to die?（我為什麼要死）；他反問那些害他的人 Why not put them to death?（為什麼不把他們處死）。神父只能說別質疑 the will of God（上帝的旨意），又勸他 Brace yourself（挺住）。想學「挺住」「控制不住」這些在巨大壓力下用的說法，這段最揪心。
「挺住」說 Brace yourself

行刑前，杜普雷神父來給死囚做最後的祈禱。一個士兵哭著問：我為什麼要死？我什麼都沒幹；他反問，為什麼那些該負責的人不死、不被 put them to death（處死）。神父回答不能質疑 the will of God（上帝的旨意），還說他在敵人面前表現過勇氣，現在也該在自己人面前 show it（拿出來）。士兵卻說自己 I'm scared（我害怕），I can't help it（我控制不住）；神父反覆念 brace yourself（挺住），又引經文安慰他，說今日你就要同我在樂園裡了。最後軍令響起：About face（向後轉）、Forward march（齊步走），他們被押往刑柱。想學「挺住」「控制不住」「上帝的旨意」這些說法，這段最重。

Why don't they 連讀，兩個問句一句比一句重。

兩句話只有害怕，喊得越短越讓人聽見崩潰。

I'm scared 弱讀成一詞，Oh 拖長再收。

引用受難前對強盜的許諾，把最重的安慰壓進一句古語。

下一章 · 17make me the goat替罪羊這場戲：槍決後將軍互相開刀指「站穩、挺住、做好心理準備」，多用來讓人面對沖擊。戲裡神父反覆對死囚說 Brace yourself，就是讓他撐住。
說 I can't help it，表示身不由己、沒辦法。戲裡死囚哭著說 I can't help it, Father，就是「我控制不住啊，神父」。
指「上帝的旨意」。戲裡神父說 We do not question the will of God，就是勸人不要質疑命運的安排。
指「把某人處死、處決」，比 kill 更正式。戲裡死囚反問 Why not put them to death，就是「為什麼不把他們處死」。
指「向後轉」，是佇列裡的軍事口令。戲裡押送死囚時就喊 About face、Forward march 這些口令。
