一名新來的胸外科醫生剛到營地，就被人盯著履歷追問：在哪兒應徵、在哪家醫院任職，可他只含糊地說 back home（在老家），連醫院名字都不肯講。對方忽然覺得眼熟，一句 I don't know your name, stranger（我不知道你叫什麼，陌生人），又說 Have you always had that mustache（你那撮小鬍子是一直留著的嗎）。氣氛很快輕鬆下來，有人請他喝 martini（馬提尼），他卻因為杯裡沒橄欖而不依不饒：a man can't really savor his martini without an olive（沒有橄欖就沒法細品馬提尼）。這些說法都能用得上：doesn't appear to be 表示「似乎並沒有什麼」，on staff 是「在職、正式任職」，make concessions 則是「做出讓步」。

可以說 make concessions，也可以說 make a concession。concession 就是讓步、妥協。戲裡說 We do have to make certain concessions to the war，意思是對這場戰爭，多少得做些讓步。
resident 是住院醫師，屬於還在培訓階段的醫生；on staff 指已經成為醫院正式編制的一員。戲裡問 Were you, like, a resident, or on staff someplace，就是在打聽對方以前是哪種身份。
可以說 savor a martini。savor 是慢慢享受味道的意思。戲裡那句 a man can't really savor his martini without an olive，就是說沒有橄欖，一個人就沒法真正細品馬提尼。
因為營地離前線只有三英里，物資緊張，酒吧只能湊合。戲裡的說法是 We do have to make certain concessions to the war，連一杯像樣的馬提尼都得向戰爭讓步，這也是全片的黑色幽默。
