希爾迪一個人在記者室，越獄的厄爾·威廉斯突然端著槍進來，要她別透露自己的行蹤。她沒跑，反倒穩住他，轉頭在電話裡喊 On the level（說真的），催沃爾特·伯恩斯快來，還告訴對方厄爾就在她手上。想看懂怎麼把舉槍的人先勸住，就盯著這兩句聽。
「誰都信不得」英語：You can't trust anybody in this crazy world

越獄的厄爾·威廉斯溜進記者室，撞見獨自留下的希爾迪，用槍逼她別說出自己在哪。希爾迪沒有硬拼：厄爾說 You can't trust anybody in this crazy world（這瘋狂的世界裡誰都信不得），她順著他的話說自己也不信任何人，又告訴他自己正在寫他的報道 production for use（為使用而生產）。趁他猶豫，她打電話給沃爾特·伯恩斯，一句 On the level（說真的）請他快來，還說厄爾就在她手上。莫莉·馬洛伊隨後趕到，勸不住地要去找他們，兩人只好先想辦法藏起厄爾。

下一章 · 14sitting pretty處境安穩這場戲：把逃犯藏進書桌裡意思是「躲起來、別露面」。說的是一旦有人越獄或出事，先藏好別讓人找到。這裡有人被囑咐 lay low and keep your mouth shut，就是先躲起來，別亂說話。
try any tricks。厄爾拿槍指著希爾迪時說 If you try any tricks, I'll shoot you，就是「你要是敢耍花樣，我就開槍」。trick 在這裡是使詐、動手腳的意思。
level 有「水平、擺平」的意思，on the level 原本指用水平儀驗過、沒做手腳，後來就成了「說真的、不騙你」。希爾迪在電話裡急著找人幫忙，就用了這句。
直譯「為使用而生產」，是厄爾案子裡被反覆提到的說法，指東西造出來是給人用的。希爾迪說自己正寫他這篇報道，用它拉近和厄爾的距離。
get someone out。莫莉說要 I want to get him out，意思是想把厄爾弄出去、帶他脫身。out 強調從裡面出來，用在救人、越獄、幫忙脫身都行。
可以說 on the level，也可以說 for real、no kidding。日常更隨口用 for real，on the level 偏老派、偏電影對白，但意思一樣，都是強調自己沒撒謊。
