希爾迪鑽進牢房，一句 My name's Johnson 開始採訪厄爾·威廉斯，問他開槍時想的是什麼，一步步把他引到「為使用而生產」。出來時記者們卻在打賭：I give the marriage six months（我打賭這婚撐不過六個月）。想學採訪和打賭的說法，ten to one（十有八九）這類表達都用得上。

希爾迪溜進牢房採訪厄爾·威廉斯，先自報家門 I'm Johnson，再一點點問出他的遭遇：丟了工作、在公園聽街頭演說、開始信那些話。她引導他回憶開槍那一刻，把話題繞到「為使用而生產」，讓厄爾親口說槍就是用來開槍的、這沒什麼瘋——正好給了報紙證明他神志不清的材料。厄爾還說 It's against everything I stand for，堅稱自己沒罪。採訪結束，記者室裡的人卻更關心希爾迪的婚事，一句 I give the marriage six months，賭她和布魯斯撐不久。幾個表達值得學：give something six months 是「預計撐不過半年」，ten to one 是「十有八九」，stand for 是「信奉、代表某種原則」。採訪、八卦、打賭時都能用。
A1–C2 是歐標等級。點一個等級後，比它高的卡片會變淡，播放到那裡不會自動暫停。

一句自證清醒，卻把死刑犯的絕望說得輕描淡寫，反著聽更刺人。
I'm just as ... as anybody else.
被人暗示你有毛病時反著用，語氣要平；正式場合別拿來抬槓。
I'm as normal as the next guy. ／ There is nothing wrong with me at all.
中性
重音落在 sane 和 else，前半句別搶拍。
I'm just as capable as anybody else in this room. 我跟這屋裡任何人一樣能幹。
“Of course not. It's against everything I stand for.”
當然不是。那違揹我信奉的一切。
否認裡帶著信念，比喊「我沒幹」更有分量，一句立住人物。

against 和 everything 稍重，句尾 for 收住。

把看衰別人的話說成賭注，油滑又輕蔑，記者腔一下就出來了。
I'll bet you ten to one (that) ...
熟人之間打趣、下判斷時用；對不熟的人說會顯得輕浮。
Ten to one they won't make it. ／ I would put money on it failing.
口語
ten to one 連成一串，don't last 連讀。
I'll bet you ten to one the meeting runs long. 我賭十比一，這會一定開超時。
“I've never had a gun in my hand before.”
我以前從沒拿過槍。
一句平靜的陳述，把死刑犯的荒誕與可憐全壓在手裡那支槍上。
I've never had a ... in my ... before.
描述第一次經歷某件危險事時用；放在玩笑場合會顯得不合時宜。
I've never held one of these before. ／ I'd never even touched a gun until that day.
中性
never 咬重，gun in my hand 連讀，before 輕收。
I've never had a snake in my hand before. 我以前從沒把蛇捧在手裡過。
“It must be pretty nice to be able to walk out of a place and quit.”
能說走就走、撂挑子不幹，一定挺爽的。
用羨慕的口吻說出記者對自由的嚮往，也反襯他們誰也走不掉。
It must be pretty nice to be able to ... and ....
羨慕別人能瀟灑脫身時用；對剛失業的人說會像在炫耀。
It must be nice to just walk away. ／ I wish I could pack up and quit like that.
口語
must be 連讀，pretty nice 上揚，quit 尾音乾脆。
It must be pretty nice to be able to sleep in and quit rushing. 能睡到自然醒、不用趕時間，可真讓人羨慕。

可以說 ten to one。字面是「十比一」，賭注賠率裡就代表把握很大，所以 I'll bet you ten to one 就是「我十有八九敢跟你賭」。
是「信奉、代表某種原則」。厄爾說 It's against everything I stand for，意思是殺人不符合他信奉的一切，用來替自己辯解。
是法律說法，指「以精神失常為由抗辯」，想借此脫罪。厄爾說自己沒法 plead insanity，因為他跟別人一樣清醒。
意思是「送某人出門」。有人問 You mind if I don't show you out?，就是客氣地說「我不送你了，你不介意吧」，通常出現在客人要告辭的時候。
