這章由兩部分組成。前半段是漢森寫給俄方的信，署名的“拉蒙”正是他的化名：他要五萬美元，卻說超過十萬美元一次就用不上；用 I am much safer if you know little about me（你們對我瞭解得越少，我就越安全）解釋自己為何不肯露面；還用 liken to（把……比作）把美國說成一個強壯卻遲鈍的孩子，最後寫 Nothing lasts forever（沒有什麼能長久）。後半段，他守在門口等晚歸的埃裡克，一句 Very disappointed in you, young man（年輕人，我對你很失望），然後用送花、要地址的方式試探對方。想學正式英文信的表達、以及上司話裡帶刺的關心，這兩段都很典型。
