I would have helped him。甘佈雷利解釋自己並非抗拒，而是「我本來會幫他的」，這裡 would have 表示對過去沒發生的事的假設，常跟 but 連用，比如 but he couldn't wait。
沒那麼嚴重，是誇張說法，意思是「凍出病來、要凍死了」。下雨天催人換衣服就會說 You'll catch your death of pneumonia，等於「你要凍出肺炎了」。
意思接近，都是「忍受、將就」，但 put up with 更口語。克魯索說警察因為職責得 put up with a lot of things，就是忍下很多私下不會忍的事。
