暴风雨夜，灵媒海尔加来借蜡烛，进门先说自己 psychic（灵媒），还预言 It will be big storm（会有一场大风暴）。她撞见自称秘书的克利福德，忽然盯着问 You wear boots（你穿靴子）？一个借蜡烛的小插曲，把案子的关键线索抖了出来。

暴风雨夜，荷兰灵媒海尔加冒雨来布鲁尔家借蜡烛，说小屋里一根都没有。自称是秘书的克利福德开门让她进来，两人寒暄；海尔加自称 psychic（灵媒），还说布鲁尔先生的妻子去世前她就有感应，又预言 It will be big storm（会有一场大风暴），风雨雷电都报了个准。聊着聊着她忽然注意到对方的靴子，追问 You wear boots（你穿靴子）——为破案埋下伏笔。西德尼回家，她还不忘问他有没有在暴风雨前 get home（到家）。值得学的三个说法：psychic 是灵媒；lightning and thunder 是电闪雷鸣；be able to do something 是能够做某事。

下一章 · 26fed up with受够了这场戏：通灵师冒雨再次警告指「灵媒、通灵的人」，自称能感应到别人看不到的事。台词里海尔加一句 I'm psychic，就是「我是灵媒」。
说 lightning and thunder，lightning 是闪电，thunder 是雷。台词里预报暴风雨时，把 wind and rain、lightning and thunder 一起列了出来。
多数时候不是质问，而是客气的提议，相当于「你何不……」。台词里 Why don't you come in? 就是「你何不进来呢」，比祈使句柔和。
意思相近，但 be able to 更正式，也能用在 will、完成时等 can 不方便的时态里。台词里 able to predict his wife's death 就是「能预言他妻子的死」。
get home 就是「到家、回到家」。台词里问他有没有在暴风雨前 get home，意思是「赶在暴风雨前回到家」。
