電視臺高層為要不要讓綁匪上節目吵成一團，一句 Only an idiot kidnaps（只有蠢貨才去綁架）把綁架罵得毫不留情；隨後綁匪打來電話談條件，還提醒別 have the call traced（讓人追查電話）。想學怎麼強硬表態、怎麼防著被查，這幾句都實用。
「絕不讓上節目」：on the air 是在播出

這是一場圍繞「要不要讓綁匪上節目」的拉鋸。電視臺高層主張先錄下來、拖到深夜再決定；傑裡的律師當場發火，揚言要起訴電視臺和聯邦調查局，還甩出一句 Only an idiot kidnaps（只有蠢貨才去綁架）。有人擔心綁匪會在節目裡 deliver a coded message（傳出一段暗號），也有人堅持「用十分鐘節目時間換一條人命」不成立。電話接通後，自稱替金先生談條件的一方要求不許 have the call traced（讓人追查電話）、不許 press leaks（把訊息漏給媒體），還要把觀眾留到節目播完。想練談判、威脅、拒絕的口語，這些都值得記。

要一口回絕、劃死底線時用；日常聊天這樣說會顯得過於強硬。

重讀 no 和 air，will we 之後降調收住。
Under no circumstances will we lend him the car. 我們無論如何都不會把車借給他。
“Only an idiot kidnaps. And only an idiot decides to do what you guys are doing.”
只有蠢貨才去綁架。也只有蠢貨才會決定幹你們現在乾的事。
同一個句式重複兩遍，把滿屋子的推諉照得無處可躲。
Only an idiot + 動詞
諷刺某件事做得太蠢時用；當面或正式場合別輕易出口。
Only a fool would agree to this. ／ Only an idiot would sign that.
口語
兩個 only 都重讀，idiot 稍拉長，句尾下沉。
Only an idiot would sign a contract without reading it. 只有傻子才會看都不看就籤合同。
“I noticed you just did. I heard the sounds. I do know those sounds.”
我注意到你剛查了。我聽見那些動靜了。那些聲音我熟。
三句短句步步緊逼，一個重讀的 do 就把主動權翻了過去。
I do know + 名詞
要用強調語氣說「我確實知道」時用；正式書面語少用 do 強調。
I really do know that sound. ／ I can tell those sounds anywhere.
口語
do 重讀，those sounds 連讀，三句之間各停一下。
I do know that voice, even on a bad line. 就算訊號再差，那聲音我也認得出來。

眼下要權衡的，不過是十分鐘的脫口秀時段和一條人命……
把道德難題塞進一句冷冰冰的比較，兩個量放在天平上，荒謬和沉重同時到場。

提醒別人別把小事看得比人重要時用，正式討論可以，別拿它開玩笑或誇大其詞。

正式
All we're dealing with 連讀，against a man's life 放慢加重。
All we're weighing here is one budget line against a job. 要權衡的不過是一筆預算和一份工作。
下一章 · 17blow your mind讓人震撼到極點這場戲：深夜向偶像表白播出、上節目。臺詞裡說 Under no circumstances will we put this man on the air，就是「無論如何都不讓這個人上節目」。
on the spur of the moment。臺詞裡模仿綁匪的辯解：I did it on the spur of the moment，就是「我是一時衝動才這麼做的」。
have the call traced。電話裡的人說 Don't have the call traced，就是「別去查這通電話」。
take care of。臺詞裡說 We've taken care of that by bringing along an article of clothing，就是「這事我們辦妥了，還帶了一件你會認出來的衣物」。
Under no circumstances，語氣比直接說 no 更硬。電視臺用它表態絕不讓綁匪上節目，一點回旋餘地都不留。
