新來的囚犯互相打聽 So, what's the toke?（你是犯了什麼事進來的？），有人只答 An accident（一場意外），有人卻吹自己拿燃燒瓶炸了保齡球館；講到 Only thing was（唯一的問題是），才發現殺錯了人。想學英語裡怎麼搭話、怎麼講自己的倒霉事，這幾句很地道。

收監點名時，新來的囚犯先互相打聽底細：有人問 So, what's the toke?（你是犯了什麼事進來的？），一個人只說 An accident（一場意外），另一個卻眉飛色舞地講自己 firebombed the bowling alley（拿燃燒瓶炸了保齡球館），把人家男友 beat the shit out of（狠狠揍了一頓），第二晚又去 totaled the place（把那地方砸了個稀爛），最後又補上 Only thing was（唯一的問題是），他殺錯了人。隨後牢頭喊 Get in line（站隊），點數清楚，還威脅把人 put you on shithouse patrol（派去掃廁所）。想學英語裡怎麼吹牛、怎麼聽懂牢裡的黑話，這段很帶勁。
A1–C2 是歐標等級。點一個等級後，比它高的卡片會變淡，播放到那裡不會自動暫停。

我縱火炸了那家保齡球館，燒死了三個人。
兩個動詞一逗到底，把兩樁重罪說得像順手做的小事。
I did X, did Y.
交代往事、自嘲時用；語速放平反而更重，別在輕鬆場合亂說。
I broke in, took the cash. ／ I quit school, left town.
口語
firebombed 重音在前，killed 與前半句連成一串。
I sold the car, moved away. 我賣了車，搬走了。
“I was goofing around with some girls. Their boyfriends didn't like it too much, beat the shit out of me.”
我當時在跟幾個女孩瞎鬧。她們的男朋友不太高興，把我揍得半死。
輕描淡寫地說捱揍，粗話加玩笑口氣把慘事講成了段子。
I was doing X. They didn't like it, did Y.
講自己吃過虧又不想顯得可憐時用；口語場合，書面別用。
I was joking with them. They took it badly. ／ I was hanging out there. They didn't approve.
口語
didn't like it too much 連讀快，beat the shit out of 一氣呵成。
I was joking around at work. My boss didn't enjoy it, gave me a warning. 我在公司開玩笑，老闆不喜歡，警告了我一次。
“Came back the next night, totaled the place.”
第二天晚上我又回來了，把那地方整個毀了。
省略主語，兩個動作乾脆利落，像老手在報自己的戰績。
Came back ..., did ...
講連續動作、要冷硬語氣時用；口語敘事常見，正式寫作別省主語。
Went back later, cleaned it out. ／ Returned the next day, wrecked everything.
口語
Came back 後稍頓，totaled 重讀。
Went back at dawn, finished the job. 天亮時我又回去，把活幹完了。
“Only thing was, I wasted the wrong three people.”
唯一的問題是，我殺錯了那三個人。
用「唯一的問題是」帶出三條人命，反諷冷到骨子裡。
Only thing was, ...
先鋪墊再抖出大問題時用；反諷很重，別拿別人的不幸開玩笑。
Only trouble was, I got the wrong man. ／ The only problem was, it wasn't him.
口語
Only thing was 後停頓，wrong three people 逐詞壓實。
Only thing was, I sent the invite to everyone. 唯一的問題是，我把邀請發給了所有人。
“They keep the rest of the animals in line and give out the work assignments.”
他們看管剩下這幫人，還負責派活。
把囚犯說成 animals，一個詞就把這裡的人際等級講透。
keep the rest of ... in line
形容有人管著一群難搞的人時用；這詞帶貶義，當著對方別說。
They keep the rest of the crew in line. ／ They manage the others and hand out tasks.
中性
the rest of 連讀，in line 略拖，assignments 重音在後。
She keeps the rest of the interns in line and hands out tasks. 她管著其餘實習生，還負責派活。
“They're gonna put you on shithouse patrol.”
他們會派你去掃廁所。
gonna 加髒詞，預告的是新人最低的待遇，語氣滿不在乎。
They're gonna put you on ...
半開玩笑地警告誰會攤上苦差時用；粗俗，陌生場合別用。
They're gonna stick you on cleanup. ／ They'll put you on the worst shift.
口語
gonna put you 連讀，shithouse 重讀。
They're gonna put you on weekend duty. 他們會把週末的班排給你。

下一章 · 03a real class act模範人物這場戲：念罪狀拆穿他的意外說這是監獄裡的黑話，toke 在這裡指「刑期、罪名」，整句就是「你是犯了什麼事進來的？」。熟人之間也常拿來說笑，意思接近 What are you in for?
意思是「唯一的問題是」，用來在講完一件事後補上關鍵的轉折。臺詞 Only thing was, I wasted the wrong three people 就是「只不過，我殺錯了那三個人」。
說 goof around，也可以說 goof off。指的是無所事事地鬧著玩，不是認真做事。臺詞 I was goofing around with some girls 就是「我跟幾個姑娘瞎鬧」。
說 the rest of，後面接名詞，比如 the rest of the animals（剩下的那幫人）。臺詞裡牢頭就是管著 the rest of 這些人。
監獄黑話，指「掃廁所的苦差」。shithouse 是廁所的粗俗說法，patrol 本是巡邏；把最髒最沒面子的活兒說成「巡邏」，帶點黑色幽默。
