下一章 · 13know what it's like知道那是什麼滋味這場戲：地下室裡自述身世意思是「你有沒有做過哪怕一點事去幫她？」。at all 放在否定或疑問里加強語氣，表示「根本、絲毫」；提問時帶上它，等於在逼對方承認自己什麼都沒做。
說 tie someone up，比如 They tied her up（他們把她綁了起來）。tie 是「系、捆」，up 強調綁結實，日常也能說 tie up the loose ends（收尾）。
punish 是「懲罰」，這裡用 were punishing 表示當時正在進行，意思是「我們當時以為這只是在教訓她」。用進行時把長期虐待說成一件正在做的事，聽上去像在給自己開脫。
Not really 比直接說 No 委婉，意思是「算不上、不太算」。法庭上證人不想把話說死時常用它，既不承認，也不算撒謊。
意思是「一頓狠打」。awful 在這裡不是「糟糕的」，而是加強語氣，表示程度很重；whipping 指用鞭子或東西抽打，合起來就是被打得很慘。
