格特魯德鎖在樓上養病，家裡亂成一團。她一邊說 We all have to learn to get along better（咱們都得學著好好相處），一邊把西爾維婭關在地下室，還讓全家統一口徑：Sylvia... had to go to juvenile（西爾維婭被送去少管所了）。嘴上說相處，實際在掩蓋，家庭裡勸和、找藉口都用得上這幾句。

下一章 · 12tie someone up把某人綁起來這場戲：法庭上孩子承認施暴意思是「被送去了少管所」。juvenile 在這裡是名詞，指少管所、少年管教機構，不是形容詞「青少年的」。格特魯德用這句話，是想對外掩蓋西爾維婭其實被關在地下室。
可以說 learn to get along better，get along 就是「相處、合得來」。臺詞 We all have to learn to get along better 表面是勸一家人和睦，其實出自格特魯德之口，更像是在要求孩子聽話。
常見說法是 learn one's lesson，臺詞裡用的是第三人稱 learns her lesson，也就是「待到她長了記性為止」。這句話常用來表示讓人吃點苦頭後記住教訓。
不止。work together 更常表示「一起出力、齊心把難關度過」，也可以說一起配合。臺詞 So, we all have to work together, as a family 就是格特魯德要求全家一起省錢、幹活。
可以說 was sent to。had to go to 字面是「不得不去」，用在少管所這類地方，聽起來像身不由己，實際上是格特魯德在撒謊，替真相找個體面的說法。
