托馬斯把書一推，直接說 I hate reading（我討厭讀書）。布拉德沒生氣，只說 I'm not going to give up on you，其中 give up on someone（對某人放手）翻過來就是「我絕不放棄你」，又說一切都得 work extra hard（格外用功）。遇到垂頭喪氣的人，這兩句比一句「加油」有用得多。

布拉德在學校走廊上碰到阿曼達，她問他為什麼不能上他的課，他只能說她爸爸做了對她最好的選擇；轉頭他又發現托馬斯沒打招呼就離開教室，罰他留校。真正的高潮是布拉德陪討厭讀書的托馬斯讀書：他讓托馬斯演自己、自己演妥瑞氏症，讓托馬斯親身體會閱讀有多難。托馬斯問，你討厭書怎麼當老師？布拉德說，世上的一切都在書裡，自己只是得 work extra hard（格外用功）才能讀出來。最後他承諾不會 give up on someone（對某人放手），也不會讓托馬斯放棄自己。想鼓勵想放棄的人，或在講規矩時說 be supposed to（按理不該），這幾句都能用。

下一章 · 16fed up受夠了這場戲：怕妥瑞氏症拖累女友字面是「放棄某人」，指對一個人不再抱有指望、撒手不管。布拉德對托馬斯說 I'm not going to give up on you，就是「我不會放棄你」。
可以說 give up on someone。give up 是「放棄」，後面接 on 加人，就表示對這個人的事不再抱希望，比如放棄勸一個朋友、放棄等一個人回頭。
它表示「按理應該」或「按理不該」，常帶一點「可你沒這麼做」的責備。布拉德說 you're not supposed to leave the class without asking，就是「不打招呼就走是不對的」。
work hard 是「努力」，work extra hard 是「格外用功、比別人多下功夫」。托馬斯讀書比誰都吃力，所以布拉德說自己得 work extra hard，才能把書裡的東西讀出來。
是承諾，也是安慰，語氣溫和但很堅定。老師說這話，等於告訴學生「不管多難我都陪你」，比直接說加油更像一個約定。
