婚礼上轮到培尼狄克和碧翠丝，两人照旧嘴硬。有人问 Do not you love me（你不爱我吗），得到的是 Why, no（不啊）；被追问就拿 in friendly recompense（当作朋友间的回报）搪塞，还说别人 much deceived（大受蒙骗）。可希罗拿出证据：一封是培尼狄克亲笔的 halting sonnet（磕磕绊绊的歪诗），写给碧翠丝；另一封是碧翠丝的笔迹，写着她对培尼狄克的心意。人证物证俱全，两人只好认栽，感叹 Here's our own hands against our hearts（手迹拆穿了真心）。培尼狄克最后松口 I will have thee（我娶你），还嘴硬补一句 by this light（凭这灯光起誓），说自己不过是 for pity（出于可怜）。想学嘴硬、否认、被拆穿后还嘴硬，这段全是范本。

light 是「灯光」，by this light 就是「凭这盏灯起誓」，是一种赌咒的说法，类似 by this light I swear。培尼狄克用它给嘴硬加码，说自己娶她只是可怜她。
qualify 常见意思是「合格」，但在正式英语里也可以表示「解释、限定、把话说圆」。台词 All this amazement can I qualify，就是「这一连串惊奇，我能解释清楚」。
sick for me。sick 在这里不是「生病」，而是「相思、为情所困」，sick for someone 就是「为某人害相思」。台词里还夸张成 nearly dead for me（为我快死了）。
recompense 是「回报、补偿」，friendly 是「朋友般的」。in friendly recompense 就是「当作朋友间的回报」，用来把感情说淡，其实是嘴硬之下的退路。
