培尼狄克偷听完众人编排他的话，信以为真，一句 This can be no trick（这不可能是圈套）之后就沦陷了。他说既然碧翠丝爱他，it must be requited（就得回报），还决定放下骄傲，最后喊出 I will be horribly in love with her（我就要疯了一样爱上她了）。想学怎么表达「得到回应」「宁死也不」，这几句话最好用。

培尼狄克躲在树后，把众人故意说给他听的话当了真，一句 This can be no trick（这不可能是圈套）就把自己说服了。他听人说碧翠丝爱他，便觉得 it must be requited（就该回报），又听人说他会被说成 bear myself proudly（端起架子），于是提醒自己不能傲慢。他还念起众人夸她的话，句句 cannot reprove it（挑不出毛病），最后干脆宣布：I will be horribly in love with her（我就要疯了一样爱上她）。他辩解说，A man loves the meat in his youth that he cannot endure in his age（年轻时爱吃的肉，老了就吃不下），还反问那些 quips（俏皮话）和 paper bullets of the brain（想出来的纸弹子）能不能吓住他。想学怎样用英语谈感情、回击讽刺，这段独白句句能用。

下一章 · 13double meaning双关这场戏：设局偷听劝她动心字面是「脑子造出来的纸弹子」，指讽刺挖苦的话、写在纸上的俏皮话，看着吓人，其实伤不了人。培尼狄克用它来反问：这些挖苦还能拦住他恋爱吗？
requite 是「回报、报答」，be requited 就是「得到回应」。培尼狄克听说对方爱他，脱口一句 it must be requited，意思是这份情当然得有来有往。
would rather die than。rather 表宁愿，die than 后面接那件宁死不做的事。台词的 She will rather die than give any sign of affection，就是「她死也不肯露出一丝情意」。
die a bachelor。bachelor 是未婚男子，die a bachelor 就是到死都单身。培尼狄克说 When I said I would die a bachelor，当年他确实这么发誓过。
horribly 本是「可怕地」，放在 in love 前面是夸张的说法，等于「爱得死去活来、疯了一样爱」。培尼狄克嘴上嫌弃，最后还是用这个词认了输。
