培尼狄克想用诗求爱，结果满脑子找不到韵，连「淑女」都只能配 baby（宝贝）；他自己承认 I was not born under a rhyming planet（生来就不在诗星底下）。等碧翠丝来了，两人照旧针锋相对，最后冒出一句 Thou and I are too wise to woo peaceably（你我太聪明，没法安安静静谈情说爱）。想学嘴上不饶人的英语，这段是范本。

从古诗人一路数落到自己的笨嘴，自嘲层层加码，节奏像一段单口相声。

下一章 · 23an eye of favour青睐这场戏：喜讯传来后两对定情woo 是「求爱、追求」，peaceably 是「和平地、不吵不闹地」。woo peaceably 就是「安安静静地谈情说爱」。碧翠丝说两人 too wise to woo peaceably，意思是太聪明了，非斗嘴不可。
字面是「我不是生在会押韵的星象底下」，意思就是「我天生没有写诗的天分」。培尼狄克用它自嘲：想写诗求爱，却连韵都押不上。
fall in love with。fall 是「跌落」，fall in love with someone 就是「爱上某人」，也可以说 fall in love 单用。台词里问他「哪一样缺点让你先 fall in love with me」。
in spite of 是「不顾、尽管」，也可以带点「偏要跟……作对」的意思。台词里 In spite of your heart 就是「明摆着跟你的心过不去」，很符合两人斗嘴的语气。
horn 字面是「犄角」，在英语里还暗指「绿帽」，因为不忠的丈夫会被说成头上长角。培尼狄克本来在凑韵脚，顺口押出这个不吉利的词，自己都说这些韵不吉利。
