飯桌上，母親追問亞當有沒有女朋友，還替他想像未來物件。亞當決定攤牌，not into girls（對女孩沒興趣）說出口，母親卻回 look gay（看起來像同性戀）；她嘴上說 okay with it（能接受、不介意），追問卻一句接一句。想學飯桌上最難開口的那句坦白，這段的措辭很值得看。

晚飯吃到一半，母親盯著亞當的婚戒位置開始盤問：她 I'm presuming（我猜、我想是）他還沒結婚，又把未來物件想成棕發、聰明。亞當沉默一陣，終於坦白自己沒有女朋友，因為 not into girls（對女孩沒興趣），乾脆說出 I'm gay。母親有點意外，反覆確認，還甩出一句 look gay（看起來像同性戀），說自己其實 okay with it（能接受、不介意）。話題轉到別人會不會刻薄、要不要結婚生子，她甚至用 have your cake and eat it（兩頭都想佔）來形容同性婚姻；亞當只說，很長一段時間裡結婚生子 wasn't a possibility（根本不是一個選項）。想學怎麼在飯桌上開口，也學怎麼接住父母的追問，這段很典型。
