Santa Returns to the Elf Forest, explained

What's really going on

The scene returns the story to its mythic roots. Santa steps back onto the elves' forest and is greeted with reverence—"you're on hallowed ground here"—but the visit is not sentimental. Belsnickel has destroyed the Christmas Star, and the fix requires both a new container and the one power only Nicholas holds: "only you, Nicholas, can harness the power of the Star of Bethlehem." Hakan's warning that the ritual is dangerous, and the flat "We have no other choice," make clear that saving Christmas will cost them.

Theme

DutySanta must perform a dangerous ritual because he alone can restore the Christmas Star.
FaithThe return to hallowed ground ties Christmas to a sacred, ancient power and ritual.

This is not what I expected Turkey to look like at all.

Kate's surprise that the mythic elf forest is in a place she knows as Turkey.

You're about to witness something that no one else on earth has ever seen before.

Santa builds up the wonder of the forest before the danger appears.

But only you, Nicholas, can harness the power of the Star of Bethlehem.

The reason the mission needs Santa himself: the star's power responds only to him.

We have no other choice.

A plain acceptance that the dangerous ritual is the only way forward.

Questions about this scene

Why do Santa and Kate go back to the forest?

They need the elves' help after Belsnickel destroys the Christmas Star, and only Santa can perform the ritual to restore it.

What does 'hallowed ground' mean here?

It means a sacred place; Santa is telling Kate that the elves' forest is holy and should be treated with respect.

Why is the ritual dangerous?

Harnessing the power of the Star of Bethlehem is risky, as Hakan warns, but it is the only way to rebuild the star.

Who is Hakan?

The leader of the elves and an old friend of Santa's, who greets them and explains what Belsnickel has done.

Why does only Santa qualify for the ritual?

Because the power of the Star of Bethlehem responds only to Nicholas, so no one else can perform it.
