电视台高层为要不要让绑匪上节目吵成一团，一句 Only an idiot kidnaps（只有蠢货才去绑架）把绑架骂得毫不留情；随后绑匪打来电话谈条件，还提醒别 have the call traced（让人追查电话）。想学怎么强硬表态、怎么防着被查，这几句都实用。

这是一场围绕「要不要让绑匪上节目」的拉锯。电视台高层主张先录下来、拖到深夜再决定；杰里的律师当场发火，扬言要起诉电视台和联邦调查局，还甩出一句 Only an idiot kidnaps（只有蠢货才去绑架）。有人担心绑匪会在节目里 deliver a coded message（传出一段暗号），也有人坚持「用十分钟节目时间换一条人命」不成立。电话接通后，自称替金先生谈条件的一方要求不许 have the call traced（让人追查电话）、不许 press leaks（把消息漏给媒体），还要把观众留到节目播完。想练谈判、威胁、拒绝的口语，这些都值得记。

重读 no 和 air，will we 之后降调收住。
Under no circumstances will we lend him the car. 我们无论如何都不会把车借给他。
“Only an idiot kidnaps. And only an idiot decides to do what you guys are doing.”
只有蠢货才去绑架。也只有蠢货才会决定干你们现在干的事。
同一个句式重复两遍，把满屋子的推诿照得无处可躲。
Only an idiot + 动词
讽刺某件事做得太蠢时用；当面或正式场合别轻易出口。
Only a fool would agree to this. ／ Only an idiot would sign that.
口语
两个 only 都重读，idiot 稍拉长，句尾下沉。
Only an idiot would sign a contract without reading it. 只有傻子才会看都不看就签合同。
“I noticed you just did. I heard the sounds. I do know those sounds.”

三句短句步步紧逼，一个重读的 do 就把主动权翻了过去。
I do know + 名词
要用强调语气说「我确实知道」时用；正式书面语少用 do 强调。
I really do know that sound. ／ I can tell those sounds anywhere.
口语
do 重读，those sounds 连读，三句之间各停一下。
I do know that voice, even on a bad line. 就算信号再差，那声音我也认得出来。

把道德难题塞进一句冷冰冰的比较，两个量放在天平上，荒谬和沉重同时到场。

提醒别人别把小事看得比人重要时用，正式讨论可以，别拿它开玩笑或夸大其词。

正式
All we're dealing with 连读，against a man's life 放慢加重。
All we're weighing here is one budget line against a job. 要权衡的不过是一笔预算和一份工作。
下一章 · 17blow your mind让人震撼到极点这场戏：深夜向偶像表白播出、上节目。台词里说 Under no circumstances will we put this man on the air，就是「无论如何都不让这个人上节目」。
on the spur of the moment。台词里模仿绑匪的辩解：I did it on the spur of the moment，就是「我是一时冲动才这么做的」。
have the call traced。电话里的人说 Don't have the call traced，就是「别去查这通电话」。
take care of。台词里说 We've taken care of that by bringing along an article of clothing，就是「这事我们办妥了，还带了一件你会认出来的衣物」。
Under no circumstances，语气比直接说 no 更硬。电视台用它表态绝不让绑匪上节目，一点回旋余地都不留。
