在俱樂部裡，霍華德對鮑勃 as a matter of fact（其實）說出了壞訊息：萊斯利確實給哈蒙德寫過信，信在哈蒙德遺孀手裡，她威脅要交給控方。霍華德說這封信會讓陪審團的看法 a good deal（很大程度地）改變，於是提出要把它 get hold of（弄到手），由鮑勃出錢買下。鮑勃全權託付後，霍華德讓他 put the matter out of your mind（把這事徹底放下）。想學正式又私密的談話怎麼說，這三個表達都很實用：as a matter of fact 用來引出不太好開口的事，get hold of 表示想辦法搞到手，a good deal 表示程度。

中性
right 後稍停，but 一帶而過，expedient 重讀收尾。

“Juries can sometimes be very stupid, and it's just as well not to worry them with more evidence than they can conveniently deal with.”
陪審團有時候很蠢，證據多得他們理不清反而添亂，不讓他們操心倒也好。
把操縱陪審團說成替他們省心，一句冷話透著老練。

說某件事不做也罷、這樣反而省事時用；對當事人或正式場合偏圓滑。
It's just as well we didn't tell them. ／ Better not to load them with more than they can handle.
正式
very stupid 重讀，just as well 連讀，than 後一帶而過。
It's just as well not to explain every detail to him. 不必把每個細節都跟他講清楚，這樣反倒好。
“Well, yes, but don't you see, Bob, that it might alter things a good deal in the minds of the jury if Hammond came to your house by invitation.”
話是這麼說，可你想想，鮑勃，要是陪審團知道哈蒙德是你請到家裡來的，他們的看法就可能大不一樣。
一長句把風險層層鋪開，重點落在陪審團心裡那句。

要提醒對方一件事可能改變別人看法時用；對不熟的人這樣反問會顯得說教。

don't you see 輕快帶過，a good deal 揚起，if 從句放慢。

這不可能。你親耳聽她說，出事前幾週她跟他沒有任何聯絡。
拿對方親耳聽到的話去堵他，一句就把否認頂了回去。

用對方自己聽過的話反駁他時用；語氣偏硬，對長輩或客人要慎用。
You heard her yourself say she had not written. ／ You were right there when she said it.
口語
that's impossible 重讀，she'd had 弱讀，before it happened 收快。
You heard him say he'd never been there. 你親耳聽他說過他從沒去過那兒。
“Nonsense. We're having the party, and you're going to stay.”
胡說。宴會照辦，你也得留下。
兩個字推翻所有商量，把女主人的主意釘死。

熟人之間打斷無謂爭論、直接拍板時用；對上級或正式場合會顯唐突。

口語
Nonsense 乾脆重讀，we're having 連讀，you're going to 弱讀成 gonna。

可以說 as a matter of fact，用來引出對方不知道或不太好開口的事。霍華德就是用它開場，把萊斯利寫過信這件事告訴了鮑勃。
可以說 put the matter out of your mind，意思是「把某事徹底放下、別再想」。霍華德讓鮑勃別再為買信的事操心時，用的就是它。
常見兩種：一是「弄到手、搞到」，如 get hold of that letter（把信弄到手）；二是「聯絡上某人」。戲裡是第一種，指想辦法把那封信弄過來。
表示「倒也好、不妨」，帶點退一步的意味。霍華德說 it's just as well not to worry the jury，意思是別拿太多證據去煩陪審團反倒更好。
