弗蘭自殺未遂後，留在巴克斯特的公寓休養。她想打電話告訴姐姐，巴克斯特勸她先 talk it over（把事攤開商量），兩人就一句句排練說辭：昨晚在哪、朋友叫什麼、什麼時候能回家。可說著說著，弗蘭還是洩了底，先說 He doesn't give a damn about me（他才不在乎我），再補上 The worst part is I still love him（最糟的是我還愛著他）。鄰居德雷福斯太太來送雞湯麵，一邊罵巴克斯特，一邊勸弗蘭 settle down（安定下來），別為 good-time Charlie（尋歡作樂的男人）哭。想學怎麼把難堪的事說清楚、又怎麼當面勸人，這樣的對話很有用。

下一章 · 12from the word go從一開始這場戲：牌桌上講三次失戀意思是「在乎、當回事」，常用否定式。弗蘭說 He doesn't give a damn about me，就是「他才不在乎我呢」。語氣比 don't care 重，帶點氣憤。
說 talk it over。巴克斯特說 Let's talk it over first，就是「咱們先把這事商量清楚」。商量前先想好怎麼說，用的是 figure it out（想明白、弄清楚）。
說 settle down。德雷福斯太太勸弗蘭 find a nice, substantial man and settle down，就是找個踏實的男人安定下來，別再為不值得的人折騰。
意思是「尋歡作樂的男人、花花公子」。德雷福斯太太問 For some good-time Charlie?，就是「為了那種只會圖樂子的男人？」。帶著嫌棄，罵人不帶髒字。
說 the rest of your life。德雷福斯太太一句 for the rest of your life you wanna cry in your noodle soup?，就是「你下半輩子就想對著雞湯麵掉眼淚？」。
