庫克羅維茨醫生應約登門，維奧萊特夫人卻先繞起圈子，誇亡子塞巴斯蒂安像 the goddess from the machine（天降救場的女神），還講拜占庭皇帝讓寶座升空接見來賓的典故。她說自己 in mourning（在守喪），一句 Life is a thief（生活是個賊）。想學上流社會的客套、隱喻和綿裡藏針，這一分鐘很典型。

故事發生在維奧萊特·維納布林的宅邸：庫克羅維茨醫生應約來訪，卻被這位貴婦牽著走。她先誇亡子塞巴斯蒂安，說他總把她比作 the goddess from the machine（天降救場的女神），又講拜占庭皇帝讓寶座升空接見來客的典故，笑說 As we are living in a democracy, I reverse the procedure（我乾脆反著來，我是往下走）。她說自己是 in mourning（在守喪），因為白色是兒子最愛的顏色；又說 Life is a thief（生活是個賊）。最後才點到正題：信裡說的 an urgent matter（一件急事），還有那個不能提起的侄女凱瑟琳。想學上流社會的客套、隱喻和綿裡藏針，這些臺詞很耐聽。

解釋自己某種習慣或打扮的來歷時用；對不熟的人說會勾起太私人的往事，看場合。

下一章 · 03not unlike不能說完全不像這場戲：花園裡談捕蠅草和手術字面是「從機關裡降下的女神」，指戲劇裡突然出現、一下解決難題的角色，也就是「天降救場」。這裡形容維奧萊特自詡救場的女神。
指「在守喪、服喪」，mourning 是喪期、悼念。臺詞 I'm in mourning 就是「我正在守喪」，還解釋白色是兒子最愛的顏色。
look forward to。它通常指期待好事，這裡維奧萊特卻拿它說反話：那些老態她還得慢慢「盼」著呢，語氣帶點自嘲。
意思是「習慣使然、下意識」。她差點讓醫生去見塞巴斯蒂安，然後改口說是 force of habit，等於中文的「老毛病了」。
in audience。received people in audience 就是「正式接見來的人」，audience 在這裡不是「觀眾」，而是「謁見、接見」。
