故事發生在聖瑪麗，凱瑟琳的病房：她向庫克羅維茨醫生講起死去的塞巴斯蒂安。她說 Sebastian was a vocation, not a man（塞巴斯蒂安是一種使命，不是一個人），姑媽 Vi 從一開始就 hooked（上了癮），為他 gave up everything（放棄一切），連丈夫也丟下。塞巴斯蒂安一度去西藏出家，姑媽竟追到茅屋裡 took vows（受戒）；丈夫病危要見她，她卻 She chose to let her husband die alone（選擇讓丈夫一個人死去）。凱瑟琳平靜地說：我們都不由自主，只是 to be used（用來被利用的）——因為 Isn't that what love is? Using people?（愛不就是利用人嗎？）。最後她講起最早的記憶：狂歡節舞會的夜晚。想學冷到骨子裡的英文獨白，這些臺詞很耐讀。

At the ball... I was taken there by some boy who got too drunk to stand. I wanted to leave. My coat was in the cloakroom. They couldn't find the check for it, so I said, "Let it go"... ...and started out for a taxi. Then somebody took my arm and said: "I'll drive you home." As we left, he took off his coat and put it around my shoulders... ...and then I looked at him. I don't think I've ever seen him before then, really. He took me home. But he took me another place first. Near the Dueling Oaks at the end of Esplanade Street. We stopped. I asked what for. He didn't answer. Just struck a match to light a cigarette... ...and I looked at him, and I knew what for. I think I got out of the car before he got out of the car, and we... ...walked through the wet grass toward the great misty oaks as if... ...as if somebody were... ...calling for help there.

gave up everything。give up 是「放棄」，She gave up everything for Sebastian 就是「她為塞巴斯蒂安放棄了一切」，連丈夫也不要了。
hooked。原意是「上鉤」，引申為「上癮、被牢牢吸引」。臺詞說她 was hooked from the beginning，就是「從一開始就離不開了」。
指「立誓受戒、發誓入教」。took vows 就是發下宗教誓願；姑媽追到西藏的茅屋裡也受了戒，只為靠近塞巴斯蒂安。
意思是「算了、隨它去吧」。凱瑟琳在舞會上丟了存衣牌，就說 Let it go，不再去找外套，語氣乾脆又帶著無所謂。
