巴黎廚藝學校裡，老師教學生敲雞蛋：It is a living thing. It has a heart.（它是有生命的東西，有一顆心臟），所以要像上斷頭臺一樣乾脆——It is all in the wrist（全靠手腕），說的是真正決定成敗的是手腕的巧勁，後來常用來形容任何靠手上功夫的活兒。另一邊，萊納斯正讀著薩布麗娜從巴黎寄回的信，一邊讀一邊追問 What about David?（那戴維呢），聽到她說不想戴維了就放心。信裡她還抱怨醬汁 just about killed me（差點要了我的命）。想練聽力和閒聊，這一課既教廚房裡的行話，也教怎麼話裡藏話地打探別人的心事。

兩處 David 都重讀，第二問句尾略降，帶點不甘。

注意，雞蛋不是石頭，也不是木頭做的。
先用一連串否定給雞蛋「驗明正身」，鋪墊後面的生命宣言，節奏感很強。

想用層層否定鋪墊、再抖出結論時用；演講和玩笑都合適。
It is not a stone, and it is not wood. ／ An egg is not metal and not stone.
中性
兩個 is not 都要重讀，wood 收在降調。
This is not a toy. It is not a decoration. 這不是玩具，也不是裝飾品。

What about David? 這個句型可以套用，問「那某人呢／那某件事呢」，把 what about 後面換成想追問的人或事就行，例如 What about your job?（那你的工作呢）。
意思一樣，都是「謝天謝地」。thank goodness 更溫和客氣，適合不太熟的場合；thank God 更隨意、情緒更重，兩個都常用來表示總算鬆了口氣。
just about killed me。just about 等於「幾乎、差點」，比如這活兒差點累死我：This job just about killed me. 用來誇張地說某件事把你折騰得夠嗆。
Where are you off to? 就是問「你要上哪兒去？」，be off to 加地點表示正要去某處，比如 I'm off to Paris（我要去巴黎了）。口語裡很常見。
