馬丁斯追問門房卡爾萊姆之死的細節，越問越心驚：抬屍的有三個人，除了庫爾茨和那個羅馬尼亞人，還有神秘的「第三個人」。卡爾卻推得一乾二淨：I have no evidence（我沒證據）。有人還說他 up to no good（沒安好心），勸他別 mixed up in（摻和進）這事。想學追問和撇清的說法，這段全是。

馬丁斯在安娜的住處追問萊姆死時的細節，越聽越覺得不對勁：有人告訴過他，萊姆不是當場就死的。門房卡爾起初不願多談，說這種事最好別 mixed up in（摻和進去）；被問急了才說出關鍵——抬屍的一共三個人，除了庫爾茨和那個羅馬尼亞人，還有神秘的「第三個人」，那人沒去 give evidence（作證），也沒人看清他的臉，可能就是 just anybody（隨便哪個人）。安娜和卡爾都勸馬丁斯收手：有人甚至說他 up to no good（沒安好心）。想學追問真相、撇清關係時的說法，這幾句都很地道。

整場戲的謎底就藏在這句平鋪直敘裡：三，而不是二。

講述一件事有幾個參與者時用；正式陳述裡把 three 換成具體數字即可。
A dozen neighbours helped to search the woods. ／ Two strangers helped to push the car off the road.

three men 略重讀，helped to 連讀，句尾放平收。

“I should have listened to my wife.”
我當初就該聽我老婆的。
一句懊悔，把怕事和後悔全交代了，比任何解釋都真實。
I should have done something
為過去沒做的事後悔時用；對當事人說像認錯，對朋友說更像自嘲。
I should have trusted her instinct. ／ I should have known better.

should have 連成 should've，listened to 輕讀快過。
I should have listened to my doctor years ago. 我多年前就該聽醫生的。
“It's nonsense! It is all nonsense! It was an accident.”
胡說八道！全是胡說八道！那就是一場意外。
連喊三句層層加碼，用一口咬定來蓋住心虛，特別像真人。
It's nonsense! It's all nonsense!
當面駁斥離譜的說法時用；對上級或客戶這樣喊會顯得失禮。
That's ridiculous, all of it. ／ Nonsense, every word of it.
口語
三句一句比一句高，nonsense 重讀，末句突然放低收。
That's nonsense, and everyone here knows it. 那是胡說，這裡每個人都清楚。
“I have no evidence. I saw nothing, I said nothing.”
我沒什麼證詞。我什麼都沒看見，什麼都沒說。
用「沒有、沒看見、沒說」三個否定把自己摘乾淨，躲得理直氣壯。
I saw nothing, I said nothing.
宣告自己不知情、不摻和時用；聽來更像撇清，正式場合要慎用。
I heard nothing and told no one. ／ I know nothing about it.
口語
I have 弱讀，nothing 重讀，兩個分句之間頓一下。
I saw nothing and I said nothing to anyone. 我什麼都沒看見，也沒跟任何人提過。
“You only saw a dead man with three men carrying him.”
你只看見一個死人，被三個人抬著。
一句就把對方的全部證據壓縮成「你只見了表面」，反將一軍。
You only saw ... with someone doing something
指出對方只見了片面時用；對朋友說像抬槓，場合不對容易得罪人。
You only heard one side of the story. ／ All you saw was the surface of it.
中性
only 重讀，dead man 連讀，carrying him 輕快帶過。
You only saw the ending, not the years that led to it. 你只看到了結局，沒看到之前那些年。
“If he was killed at once, how could he have talked about me and this lady here after he was dead?”
如果他是當場被弄死的，怎麼可能死後還提起我和這位女士？
用一個不可能成立的反問，把整樁案子的矛盾擺到檯面上。
If he was ..., how could he have ...?
用事實矛盾反駁對方時用；書面論證裡也常用這種反問逼人回答。
If he died instantly, how could he have spoken at all? ／ How could he have done that if he was already gone?
中性
if 從句快帶過，how could he have 連讀成 how-could-eev。
If the shop was closed, how could he have bought anything there? 如果店關門了，他怎麼可能在那兒買到東西？
下一章 · 07get to the bottom of查個水落石出這場戲：上門沒收證件與信件意思是「在幹壞事、沒安好心」，常用於猜測某人鬼鬼祟祟。原句 She said you were up to no good，就是「她說你沒安好心」。
說 give evidence，也可以說 give testimony。原句 I was not the only one who did not give evidence，就是「沒去作證的不止我一個」。
指被捲進、摻和進某件事，多帶麻煩的意味。原句 it's better not to be mixed up in things like this，就是「這種事最好別摻和」。
指毫無特徵的「隨便哪個人」。原句 He might have been just anybody，就是「他可能就是隨便哪個人」，正是那個神秘第三人的關鍵描述。
說 look someone up，注意是上門去找、當面拜訪。原句 can I look you up again，就是「我還能再來找你嗎」。
