咖啡館裡，自稱哈里摯友的庫爾茨替哈里打圓場：警方只是荒唐地覺得他 mixed up in（捲入某事）一樁黑市買賣。他帶馬丁斯重回哈里出事的地方，說哈里臨終還念著要 look after（照顧）他，故事滴水不漏。可一處矛盾細節，讓馬丁斯當起偵探，追問哈里到底 be up to something（在搞什麼）。
