酒吧裡，一個年輕人不信美國有自己的神話，一位老者卻說：美國真有個能 grant a wish（幫人實現願望）的傢伙，叫 O.W. 格蘭特，每人只給一個。他神出鬼沒，平時愛捉弄人，可一旦 take a shine to someone（喜歡上某人），就會來真的。想聊都市傳說、或形容「看誰順眼」，這些說法很有畫面。

酒吧裡，一個年輕人跟扎克爭論美國有沒有自己的神話，一位老者插話說：美國真有個能 grant a wish（幫人實現願望）的傢伙，叫 O.W. 格蘭特，每位顧客只滿足一個願望。他不是人去找他，而是他來找人；他多半愛 mess with someone（戲弄、招惹別人），可要是他 take a shine to someone（喜歡上某人），就會 play it straight（來真的）。老者還說，有種說法是他父親是個跟愛爾蘭人漂洋過海來的矮妖精，所以 O.W. 格蘭特是不死之身；他抽一支雕成猴子模樣的菸斗，也就是 in the image of（照著……的樣子）一隻猴子。想聊都市傳說、形容看誰順眼，或描述照著某物做的東西，這些說法都能用。

兩句對稱，find him 和 finds them 重音各落一次。
You don't find good mentors, they find you. 好導師不是你去求來的，是他們自己找上你。

用一個定語從句把傳說釘在地理上，語氣像隨口爆料。
There is someone in ..., who ...
介紹某地有個奇特人物時能用；嚴肅場合說這個像在開玩笑。
There's a guy in this town who fixes anything. ／ There is a woman here, who knows everyone.

who grants wishes 輕快帶過，wishes 尾音別拖。
There is a man in our town, who can predict the rain. 我們鎮上有個男人，能預測下雨。
“if he takes a shine to you, he'll play it straight.”
要是他看上了你，他就會來真的。
一句裡兩個短語，把偏心和規矩一起說明白。
if someone takes a shine to you, they'll ...
說某人特別待見你時能用；對著長輩或客戶別這麼說。
If he likes you, he plays fair. ／ Once she warms to you, she drops the act.
口語
takes a 連讀，shine to you 一串滑過去，straight 加重。
If the manager takes a shine to you, you'll get the good shifts. 要是經理看上了你，好班次都歸你。

先輕描淡寫地給一個名字，再補一句「還有很多」，神秘感立刻拉滿。

兩句之間稍停，usual 和 many 各重讀一次。

不是。這裡是「老老實實、來真的」，跟玩花招相對。戲裡說他平時愛捉弄人，但遇到看上的人就 play it straight。
意思一樣，都問「為什麼」，但 how come 更口語、更隨意，後面常接正常語序。戲裡有人問 how come we've never heard of this O.W. Grant。
表示「照著……的樣子、以……為原型」，常形容雕像、畫像。戲裡說他那支菸鬥雕成猴子的模樣，就用了 carved in the image of a monkey。
