Fighting Over the Water Ration, Explained:sick and tired of

Down in the basement, the group finds water and promptly starts fighting over it. One of them pours a second glass, against the rule they "voted on," and the others call him out — until he argues the ration should match their body sizes.

あらすじ

The group goes down to the basement for water, finds Franco's old movie props, and finally drinks. The relief doesn't last: one member pours a second glass even though they agreed to one each at dinner, and the room turns on him. He complains that he's tired of the rules and says the water should be split by body size, not equally.

「Fighting Over the Water Ration」を読み解く

What's really going on

The chapter is a small political comedy about scarcity. The group has just escaped death, found water, and recovered — and the first thing it does is legislate: one glass each at dinner, a rule 'we voted on.' Break it and the room explodes. The man pouring another glass doesn't argue that he's wrong; he argues the rule is unfair — 'Why the fuck is it fair that him and I should drink the same amount of water?' — and offers a rival principle, rations by 'proportionate size.' He even pre-empts the insult: 'I don't want to come off as a diva here or anything.' What makes it funny is the mismatch between the stakes and the politics: the world is ending outside, and inside they're holding votes about glasses of water.

Theme

SurvivalWater is life now, so the group rations it — and immediately fights over who deserves more of it.
PowerThe scene turns a survival rule into a small power struggle, as one man demands a bigger share and a different principle for dividing it.

His complaint against the group's rationing: he's not sneaking water, he's tired of living under everyone's rules.

I don't want to come off as a diva here or anything.

A pre-emptive disclaimer: he knows his demand sounds self-important, and says so before anyone else can.

We should be dividing our rations based on our proportionate size.

His alternative rule for sharing: bigger people should get more, so equal shares are actually unfair to him.

I'm just pouring myself another glass of water to wash down that dry ass Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

His excuse for the extra water: he needs it only to get the dry cereal down, framing a rule-break as a small practical need.

このシーンについての質問

Why is everyone angry about the water?

They agreed to one glass each at dinner and voted on it, so when one member pours a second glass to wash down his cereal, the others treat it as breaking the group's rule.

What is the man's argument for more water?

He says it isn't fair for him and a smaller guy to drink the same amount, so rations should be divided by 'proportionate size' — a bigger person deserves a bigger share.

What does he say about sounding like a diva?

He says, 'I don't want to come off as a diva here or anything,' acknowledging that his demand for a bigger share sounds self-important, even as he makes it.

What did they find in the basement?

Besides the water, Franco's old movie props and costumes — he says it's where he keeps all his stuff from his old films. They also use a monkey flashlight keychain named Terrence Peterson.

What does 'shart' mean?

It's a crude blend of 'shit' and 'fart' — to pass gas and accidentally soil yourself. One line jokes that someone is surprised the other 'didn't shart again.'
