Kate Gives the Launch Order, Explained:go for launch

The control room runs the countdown like a show, with a foul-mouthed astronaut demanding whiskey and a wealthy donor walking in with full clearance. When the honor of giving the order goes to the scientist who found the comet, her speech is earnest: "everything is theoretically impossible until it is done," then, "we are go for launch."

あらすじ

At mission control, all indicators are green, but Commander Drask, waiting in the shuttle, is already cursing at the crew and demanding a shot of Jack Daniels. President Orlean thanks him and then gives the honor of launching to Kate, whose discovery started the mission. Kate speaks about impossibility and says, "we are go for launch." Peter Isherwell joins as a campaign donor, and the countdown begins.

「Kate Gives the Launch Order」を読み解く

What's really going on

The launch is treated less like a last hope than like a broadcast, and everyone in the room seems to be performing. Drask, the hero chosen for the cameras, swears at the ground crew and jokes that all he wants is whiskey and a few DUIs erased — hardly the tone of a man about to save the planet. Access is granted by money, not expertise: the question "Is he allowed to be in here?" is answered by pointing out that the visitor is a Platinum Eagle donor with full clearance. Only Kate, the scientist whose discovery set it all up, sounds sincere, borrowing a line about impossibility and ending with "we are go for launch." Even the countdown is partly a party — one character notes his Molly kicking in — so the film keeps the apocalypse and the celebration in the same frame, and lets the audience decide which one is actually running the room.

Theme

PowerThe launch is staged as a patriotic show, with a donor in the control room and a president handing out honors.
SatireThe crew launching a comet mission includes an impatient drunk and a man high on Molly while the world watches.

発音のポイント

  • waiting on — Waiting on links into waitin-on with a weak on.
  • got all — Got all links into go-dall with a soft flap.
  • go for — Go for links into go-fer with a weak for.
I just want you to know, this is the most propulsive thing that's ever happened to me. Thank you.

A gushing line about the launch, played for laughs: the most "propulsive" thing in his life is a rocket — the double meaning is the joke.

Think I got all day?

Drask's impatience in one line: he is not moved by the ceremony and wants the launch to get moving.

Listen, the only thanks I need is a shot of Jack Daniels.

His idea of a reward: instead of medals, the astronaut asks for whiskey and for his old drunk-driving charges to vanish.

everything is theoretically impossible until it is done.

Kate's speech turns a cliché into a mission statement: nothing is truly impossible until someone actually does it.

And with that, we are go for launch.

The official green light: after the speech, the launch is cleared and the countdown can begin.

Is he allowed to be in here?

A blunt question about access: someone wonders why a wealthy donor is standing in mission control at all.

このシーンについての質問

Why does Kate get to give the launch order?

The president frames it as returning the honor: Kate's discovery is what led to the mission, so Orlean hands her the moment and lets her announce the launch.

Why is Drask so impatient before the launch?

He treats the whole thing as a stunt. He curses at the ground crew, jokes that he only wants a shot of Jack Daniels and a few DUIs to disappear, and does not seem to grasp that the mission is real.

Why is Peter Isherwell allowed in Mission Control?

Because of money. A character explains he is a Platinum Eagle level donor to the campaign and therefore has full clearance, even though someone asks whether he should be there at all.

What is Jason on during the countdown?

He says his Molly is kicking in right as the launch begins, which fits his running joke of treating the end of the world as a party.

What does 'go for launch' mean?

It is launch-pad jargon meaning everything is cleared and the rocket may fire. In the scene it is the final line before the countdown and lift-off.
