伊芙和 V 一起吃早餐，V 客氣問 would you care for a cup of tea（要不要來杯茶），又為昨晚的反應道歉，說 hope I didn't put you off your appetite（希望沒讓你倒了胃口）。黃油還是從蘇特勒補給車上偷的；吃到一半，兩人就「人民不該怕政府」爭了起來。想學餐桌客氣話和不客氣的辯論，這幾句很實用。

伊芙在 V 的住處吃早餐，先為昨晚的反應道歉，說自己很感激。V 問她 hope I didn't put you off your appetite（希望沒讓你沒了胃口），又客氣地說 would you care for a cup of tea（要不要來杯茶）；伊芙咬了一口，驚歎自己從小就沒吃過真正的黃油，V 才說出那是從蘇特勒的補給列車上偷的。飯後她問起他在 the telly（電視）上說的那些話，兩人從莎士比亞聊到炸掉國會、從「人民不該怕政府」一路爭到該不該動手。這裡能學到：put someone off 是「倒了胃口」；would you care for 是「要不要來點」；the telly 是「電視」。想寫餐桌寒暄、禮貌相邀和理念之爭，這些說法都能用。

should not 連讀，afraid of 一帶而過，重音落在 governments。

政府才該害怕自己的人民。
把上一句整個翻過來，主謂一倒，立場瞬間反轉。
Governments should be afraid of their people.
承接上面的權利話題時用；單獨說會顯得口號化。
Power should fear the people it serves. ／ Those in charge should answer to us.

Governments 起得重，their people 收得穩，尾音別上揚。
Managers should be afraid of losing good staff, not the other way round. 管理者該怕失去好員工，而不是反過來。
“Symbols are given power by people.”
象徵的力量是人給的。
一句被動句把功勞還給普通人，冷靜又足以反擊。
X is given power by Y.
解釋某個標誌、頭銜為什麼管用時用；口語裡更常說 people give it power。
People are the ones who give symbols power. ／ A symbol is only as strong as the crowd behind it.
正式
given power 連讀，by people 收輕，句尾放平。
Badges are given power by the team, not the other way round. 徽章的分量是團隊給的，不是反過來。
“I wish I believed that was possible.”
我也希望我相信這是可能的。
wish 後一退時態，就把遺憾和清醒同時說盡了。
I wish I believed ...
想說『我也想信，可惜不信』時用；報喜或鼓勵別人時別用，會掃興。
I wish I could believe that. ／ I'd love to believe it, but I don't.
中性
wish 與 believed 之間輕頓，possible 收尾降調。
I wish I believed the deadline would actually hold. 我倒希望我相信這個截止日期真能守住。
“Every time I've seen this world change, it's always been for the worse.”
我每次見到這世界改變，都是變得更糟。
Every time 開頭，for the worse 收尾，把無力感說成經驗。

總結屢次失望的經歷時用；對新機會一味這麼說會顯得消極。

下一章 · 08in the wrong light被解讀歪了這場戲：電視名嘴放話後被尋仇意思是「倒了某人胃口、讓人失去興趣」。片裡 V 說 I hope I didn't put you off your appetite，就是「希望沒讓你沒了胃口」。提到掃興的事、影響食慾都能用。
would you care for，是很客氣的相邀說法。片裡 V 問 would you care for a cup of tea with your egg，就是「配雞蛋來杯茶怎麼樣」。招待客人時很得體。
blow up。片裡伊芙問 blowing up Parliament 能不能讓國家變好，就是「炸掉國會」。blow up 還常指「爆炸、發脾氣」，看語境。
是英式口語裡的「電視」。片裡伊芙問 on the telly 說的那些話，就是「在電視上說的」。英劇、英式對話裡常聽到，美式一般說 TV。
for the worse。片裡伊芙說這世界每次改變都 for the worse，就是「總是變得更糟」。常見的搭配還有 take a turn for the worse，指病情、局勢惡化。
