「FBI Subpoenas Jordan's Wedding Video」を読み解く

What's really going on

Jordan plays the wounded citizen, but every line is a fishing expedition. He hands the agents a list of every wedding guest and calls it helping "expedite the whole process" — cooperation as tactic, not courtesy. Bo, his private eye, sees the trap: "He's trying to rattle you, he's trying to rattle your old lady." Denham gives nothing back, turning down a drink and refusing to discuss an ongoing investigation. Jordan keeps insisting he has nothing to hide, yet he is the one who called the meeting and volunteered the list. It is a polite duel: one man performing innocence, the other letting him talk.

Theme

CorruptionA broker who built his fortune on phony accounts tries to charm the agents investigating him.
DeceptionJordan claims he has nothing to hide while handing over a list meant to steer the FBI away.

このチャプターで学べること

  • A subpoena enters the movie as a phone call, not a raid.
  • 'nothing to hide' can sound confident or guilty.
  • Calling an agent a Boy Scout is a warning.
  • The yacht is Jordan's stage for controlling the story.

発音のポイント

  • believe this — The v and th in believe this glide together.
  • an invasion — An invasion links into a-ninvasion.
  • a little — In American speech the t in a little flaps like a soft d.
But for the life of me, I can't figure out why.

Jordan's way of saying he cannot understand the investigation no matter how hard he tries — played as innocent confusion, though he knows exactly why the FBI is interested.

It's like an invasion of my privacy.

Jordan casts the subpoena as a personal violation, as if the FBI were peeping on him rather than investigating his firm.

we're the new guys on the block, you know, we're trying to make a name for ourselves.

A plea for patience: Stratton Oakmont is new, loud, and eager to be taken seriously — not, Jordan insists, criminal.

He's a Boy Scout. He thinks you're fucking Gordon Gekko.

Bo's shorthand for a by-the-book agent with no vices to exploit: Denham treats Jordan like a Wall Street villain instead of a client.

このシーンについての質問

Why does the FBI want Jordan's wedding video?

The Bureau is building a case against Stratton Oakmont and wants the faces and names of everyone in Jordan's inner circle. Bo explains that Denham already has pictures of them; the wedding footage would help identify who is who.

Why won't Bo tap Agent Denham's phone?

Bo now works as a licensed private investigator, not a cop. He warns Jordan that going after federal agents would cost him his license and land him in serious trouble, so he refuses to do anything that could be traced back to him.

Why does Jordan invite the agents onto his yacht?

He wants to size them up and find out what they know. Handing over the wedding guest list is a calculated gesture: it looks cooperative while quietly signaling that the investigation is a waste of time.

Is Jordan really innocent?

No. The narration admits a million of the two million shares were his, held in phony accounts. His talk of having nothing to hide is a performance put on for the agents.

Does Agent Denham take the bait?

No. He refuses even a drink, since Bureau agents aren't allowed to drink at sea, and ends the conversation by saying he can't discuss an ongoing investigation.
