咖啡馆里，自称哈里挚友的库尔茨替哈里打圆场：警方只是荒唐地觉得他 mixed up in（卷入某事）一桩黑市买卖。他带马丁斯重回哈里出事的地方，说哈里临终还念着要 look after（照顾）他，故事滴水不漏。可一处矛盾细节，让马丁斯当起侦探，追问哈里到底 be up to something（在搞什么）。
