马丁斯追问门房卡尔莱姆之死的细节，越问越心惊：抬尸的有三个人，除了库尔茨和那个罗马尼亚人，还有神秘的「第三个人」。卡尔却推得一干二净：I have no evidence（我没证据）。有人还说他 up to no good（没安好心），劝他别 mixed up in（掺和进）这事。想学追问和撇清的说法，这段全是。

马丁斯在安娜的住处追问莱姆死时的细节，越听越觉得不对劲：有人告诉过他，莱姆不是当场就死的。门房卡尔起初不愿多谈，说这种事最好别 mixed up in（掺和进去）；被问急了才说出关键——抬尸的一共三个人，除了库尔茨和那个罗马尼亚人，还有神秘的「第三个人」，那人没去 give evidence（作证），也没人看清他的脸，可能就是 just anybody（随便哪个人）。安娜和卡尔都劝马丁斯收手：有人甚至说他 up to no good（没安好心）。想学追问真相、撇清关系时的说法，这几句都很地道。

讲述一件事有几个参与者时用；正式陈述里把 three 换成具体数字即可。

three men 略重读，helped to 连读，句尾放平收。
Four volunteers helped to carry the boxes upstairs. 四名志愿者帮忙把箱子搬上了楼。
“I should have listened to my wife.”
我当初就该听我老婆的。
一句懊悔，把怕事和后悔全交代了，比任何解释都真实。
I should have done something
为过去没做的事后悔时用；对当事人说像认错，对朋友说更像自嘲。
I should have trusted her instinct. ／ I should have known better.
中性
should have 连成 should've，listened to 轻读快过。
I should have listened to my doctor years ago. 我多年前就该听医生的。
“It's nonsense! It is all nonsense! It was an accident.”
胡说八道！全是胡说八道！那就是一场意外。
连喊三句层层加码，用一口咬定来盖住心虚，特别像真人。
It's nonsense! It's all nonsense!
当面驳斥离谱的说法时用；对上级或客户这样喊会显得失礼。
That's ridiculous, all of it. ／ Nonsense, every word of it.
口语
三句一句比一句高，nonsense 重读，末句突然放低收。
That's nonsense, and everyone here knows it. 那是胡说，这里每个人都清楚。
“I have no evidence. I saw nothing, I said nothing.”
我没什么证词。我什么都没看见，什么都没说。
用「没有、没看见、没说」三个否定把自己摘干净，躲得理直气壮。
I saw nothing, I said nothing.
声明自己不知情、不掺和时用；听来更像撇清，正式场合要慎用。
I heard nothing and told no one. ／ I know nothing about it.
口语
I have 弱读，nothing 重读，两个分句之间顿一下。
I saw nothing and I said nothing to anyone. 我什么都没看见，也没跟任何人提过。
“You only saw a dead man with three men carrying him.”
你只看见一个死人，被三个人抬着。
一句就把对方的全部证据压缩成「你只见了表面」，反将一军。
You only saw ... with someone doing something
指出对方只见了片面时用；对朋友说像抬杠，场合不对容易得罪人。
You only heard one side of the story. ／ All you saw was the surface of it.
中性
only 重读，dead man 连读，carrying him 轻快带过。
You only saw the ending, not the years that led to it. 你只看到了结局，没看到之前那些年。
“If he was killed at once, how could he have talked about me and this lady here after he was dead?”
如果他是当场被弄死的，怎么可能死后还提起我和这位女士？
用一个不可能成立的反问，把整桩案子的矛盾摆到台面上。
If he was ..., how could he have ...?
用事实矛盾反驳对方时用；书面论证里也常用这种反问逼人回答。
If he died instantly, how could he have spoken at all? ／ How could he have done that if he was already gone?
中性
if 从句快带过，how could he have 连读成 how-could-eev。
If the shop was closed, how could he have bought anything there? 如果店关门了，他怎么可能在那儿买到东西？
下一章 · 07get to the bottom of查个水落石出这场戏：上门没收证件与信件意思是「在干坏事、没安好心」，常用于猜测某人鬼鬼祟祟。原句 She said you were up to no good，就是「她说你没安好心」。
说 give evidence，也可以说 give testimony。原句 I was not the only one who did not give evidence，就是「没去作证的不止我一个」。
指被卷进、掺和进某件事，多带麻烦的意味。原句 it's better not to be mixed up in things like this，就是「这种事最好别掺和」。
指毫无特征的「随便哪个人」。原句 He might have been just anybody，就是「他可能就是随便哪个人」，正是那个神秘第三人的关键描述。
说 look someone up，注意是上门去找、当面拜访。原句 can I look you up again，就是「我还能再来找你吗」。
